WEST is looking for a part-time biological field technician in northwest Arkansas for work currently planned until March 2018.
The primary responsibility will be to conduct standardized avian point count surveys. Additional duties may involve maintenance of bat acoustic detectors activity surveys. Fieldwork will require long days in variable weather conditions. An average month should include 4-6 days of surveys (about 25-35 hours). The field work requires long periods of focus, attention to detail, and the ability to work well both independently and with others. A 4-wheel drive vehicle will be provided or mileage will be reimbursed.

Compensation: $15-17 per hour, DOE
Candidate must be proficient in the identification of bird species in the area by sight and sound. Candidates must be able to identify raptors accurately in flight and at a distance. A bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or an equivalent degree, along with experience in field bird identification, proficient use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other basic field equipment is preferred. Necessary field equipment and training will be provided. Field technicians will be expected to provide their own suitable field clothes (e.g., rugged hiking boots, rain coat, etc.).
Candidates must be dependable and able to work long days, often beginning at sunrise. Candidates must be in good physical shape and able to manage the difficulties that may come with working in remote field locations under variable conditions. Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of the environment (e.g., biting insects, driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and extreme temperatures). A positive attitude and a commitment to quality are essential.
A valid driver’s license is required upon submittal of resume. MVR checks will be ran and driving record must meet standards set to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of WEST. A background check will be conducted on final candidates. Offer of employment will require drug testing and candidates must be able to pass drug screening criteria.
